Cancer has become one of the leading causes of death in America. There are over 30 types of cancer, the most common in men being prostate, lung, and colorectal, and among women, breast, lung, and colorectal. 80% of Cancers in America occur in people over 55 years of age while childhood cancer accounts for about 1% of new cancer diagnoses. Even though there is no cure for cancer yet, there are definitely ways we can reduce the chances of getting cancer through diet and lifestyle.

In this article, we will discuss cancer prevention and the positive changes we can make in our lifestyle to ward off this disease.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. It develops when there are changes to the DNA that result in the production of malignant cells (cancerous) that replicate. This replication happens rapidly and our bodies natural defense mechanisms are unable to stop it. The uncontrolled growth causes a tumor to form in the body, which results in the diagnosis of cancer.

How do you get Cancer?

Cancer can be a hereditary trait, in which a person is predisposed and that particular gene can be turned on through an environmental trigger. Cancers can be developed through free radicals which harm the DNA. Free radicals can come from chemical toxins, industrial pollutants, household products, food dyes, cigarette smoke, and even certain fats in one’s diet. Free radicals are unstable molecules that react with other molecules in a destructive way. It attacks the DNA and causes mutations which become the stimulus for cancer cells to begin forming.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun and tanning beds can cause cancer. Radiation in the form of x-rays, nuclear waste, and electronic instruments can be cancerous as well. Cancer can also be hormonal, as seen in women with breast and reproductive cancers. This is caused by increased levels of estrogen through hormone replacement therapy during menopause or through a high meat and dairy diet, which can also expose one to animal-fed antibiotics that contain hormones. The cumulative effect from these various sources is what gives rise to diagnosis. It can take 5-30 years from exposure for cancer to actually appear in the body.

As you can see, there are many ways to get cancer, but luckily there are many ways to prevent it as well.

Food for Cancer Prevention

Generally speaking, a fresh, whole foods diet along with ample amounts of clean water is a recipe for health and longevity. Foods that are high in antioxidants are amazing at keeping cancer at bay. This is because antioxidants fight free radical damage, which helps to inhibit cell mutation, strengthen the immune system, and are also involved in other bodily processes. The 3 major antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E. Foods rich in these nutrients include citrus fruits, whole grains, fresh vegetables, onions, garlic, carrots, and leafy greens. Lifestyle for Cancer Prevention

The way we live determines our quality of life and our quality of life determines how well we can ward off diseases like cancer. Unhealthy lifestyle habits are the easiest way to get cancer as the body’s first line of defense is left vulnerable by our behavior. The most dangerous act is smoking. Cigarettes contain carcinogens that encourage the growth of cancer cells in the body. With smoking, you are also exposed to formaldehyde and benzene which have been linked to a range of different cancers like Leukemia and kidney cancer.

Exercise is key for cancer prevention as it is not only healthy but empowering. It helps to increase energy, alleviate pain and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. When you are exercising you are keener on what you eat and have a higher chance of choosing a more wholesome meal over junk and processed goods. Other means of lifestyle changes to prevent cancer include practicing sun safety to prevent skin cancer, reducing alcohol intake, and maintaining a healthy attitude.

Supplements for Cancer Prevention

There are many studies that prove the positive effects of dietary supplements in cancer prevention. Vitamins are a great way to help prevent cancer. Vitamins are a concentrated form of any nutrient that the body may be missing or deficient in. Supplementation can assist in optimal bodily functions including immunity and disease prevention. Below are a few vitamins for cancer that are effective preventatives.

Vitamin D

This sunshine vitamin is not only great for bone health and mood balance, but studies have also shown that vitamin D may help prevent cancer. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is readily available in meats and the natural exposure to the Sun. Low levels of vitamin D, which is common in the winter months, have been linked to advanced levels of some Cancers. Vitamin D supplementation or Calcium with Vitamin D (which helps absorption rates) are great allies in cancer prevention.

Multivitamins

Multivitamins are the safety net to anyone’s diet. They help to fill nutritional gaps and make up for the recommended daily intake of vitamins you may not have gotten through your food. This is important because vitamins and minerals fuel the cells, and the cells make up the function of our body systems, including our immune system. Multivitamins contain antioxidants that help to fight free radical damage and reverse otherwise harmful chemical reactions in the body that could result in cancerous activity. Multivitamins are a great addition to anyone’s supplement regimen and an effective tool for cancer prevention.

Omega 3

Omega 3 fatty acids must be obtained from the diet as they are not manufactured in the body. They are great for bone health, ADHD in children, cognitive function, and have even proven to be helpful in the prevention of cancer because of their anti-inflammatory effects on the body. The benefits of Omega 3 are endless and are essential for both young and old in age. Reliable sources include freshwater fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna along with nuts, seeds, coconut oil, flaxseeds, and avocados.

All in all, there are many lifestyle changes that can help prevent cancer. Whether it be to quit smoking, eat healthier, or just develop a more positive attitude about life, reducing your risk of cancer is as easy as making a conscious decision to make changes in your life.
